Abstract

Objective: To clarify what counseling skills and how they are used by expert nurses to support smoking cessation in clinics. Methods: Participant observation on smoking cessation support scenes and semi-structured interviews were conducted with two qualified nurses who had been supporting smoking cessation for more than five years and analyzed qualitatively and descriptively. Results: “Skills that attract patients’ interest, make use of easy-to-understand explanations, and guide patients to ‘understand’,” “attainable skills that encourage positive thinking and increase confidence to continue smoking cessation,” “skills that strengthen motivation for smoking cessation and reduce factors that weaken motivation,” “skills that intervene flexibly and concretely in accordance with the patient’s individual world and life experiences,” “skills to avoid the risk of smoking relapse with praise and attention,” and nine other smoking cessation counseling skills were extracted. Conclusions: Expert nurses focused on improving cognition and self-efficacy, to prevent relapse after understanding the characteristics of nicotine-dependent patients in clinics. During the limited period of time and number of visits, expert nurses effectively made full use of smoking cessation counseling skills freely in each visit.
