Effect of sleep quality by the phase change material mat under the cold environment

Abstract

Heater equipment is not always organized in the evacuation site. Therefore, there is some possibility of experience sleeping under the cold environment in winter. For that reason, we examined the effect of sleep quality using the phase change material (PCM) mat, the fusion point was 40℃, in the bed. Twelve male subjects aged 23±1 wore sweatshirt and sweatpants (0.76clo) in the examination. The bedclothes were based on four pieces of blanket for disaster totaled 1.3clo. They slept the environment under the air temperature 12-13℃ and relative humidity 50%. The PCM mat was set near their feet in bed after giving a stimulus at 15 minutes before bedding. To clarify the sleep quality, we measured skin temperatures, rectal temperature, sleeping qualitative valuables, OSA sleep inventory and thermal perception. As a result, the bed inner temperature in the case of using PCM mat decreased less than that of non-mat, and the separation of sleep during sleeping got fewer than that significantly. However, it was difficult to improve the thermal perception. We suggested that the deterioration pf sleep quality only about physiological responses might be reduced by PCM mat under the cold environment.
