Abstract

<p>This study involved 5th and 6th grade students (n=160) who attend elementary schools in Tokyo, and investigated the relationship of the body shape misperception or body dissatisfaction with their physical condition, dietary / exercise habits, and the results of the new physical fitness test. As a result, there were a number of male and female children who desired to be thinner even though they were within the “normal” weight range. In addition, children with no body dissatisfaction had a higher physical strength both in male and female children. The percentages of those who did not like physical exercise and those with unhealthy dietary habits were higher among female children who misperceived their body shape and had body dissatisfaction. This study suggests a need for “shokuiku” for 5th and 6th grade students considering perception of body shape.</p>
