Abstract

A survey was conducted involving 265 males and females aged 18 years or older, to examine the status of their use of smartphones and tablet devices, subjective symptoms, related problems with devices, and the measures to reduce their burdens. The rate of young people (18 to 29 years old) who use smartphones was higher than those of middle-aged (30 to 49 years old) and elderly (50 years or older) users, and the device usage time was also longer. Eye strain was the most common symptom of their usage, and it severity increased with device usage time in young people. Middle-aged and elderly users had difficulty coping with eye strain, and experienced fatigue even when they used the devices for a short period of time. In addition, the use of the devices before going to bed had negative effects on sleep. Middle-aged and elderly users with eye strain had difficulty viewing screens with higher levels of saturation and brightness, and reading sentences depending the color and size of the characters. Screens with easy-to-read and -view color combinations, while taking into consideration the age of the users and their color vision, are expected to reduce the burdens on their users.
