Abstract
<p>We synthesized cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers with ether (oxygen), thioether (sulfur), and selenoether (selenium) linkages, and evaluated their phase-transition behavior. It was found that some of the dimers with at least one thioether or selenoether linkage exhibited not only a nematic (N) phase but also a twist-bend nematic (NTB) phase irrespective of the symmetry of the linkages. This is in contrast with the fact that symmetrically ether-linked analogues exhibited only the N phase.</p>
