Abstract

Cellulose, which is sustainable plant-origin biomass with high potential as a useful material for many practical applications, provides rod-like particles possessing well controlled nanometer order sizes in length and width. Viscoelastic behavior of cellulose nano-particle suspensions dispersed in aqueous concentrated sucrose solution at the concentration of 60 wt% was discussed. The viscoelastic behavior observed in the suspensions is essentially explained by a theory for monodisperse rigid rod particle suspensions originally proposed by Doi and Edwards. The theory was slightly modified for suspensions with polydisperse particle size distributions. The examined cellulose nano-particle suspensions behave as the model systems clearly demonstrating that the essential origin for elasticity is the reduction of the orientation entropy of dispersed rigid rod particles due to the shear strain.
