Abstract

This study reconsidered the general view that child protection and juvenile justice were assimilated and promoted military cooperation during wartime. Specifically, I analyzed articles written by staff at a reform school and juvenile training school in two magazines, Child Protection(Jido-Hogo) and Juvenile Protection(Syonen-Hogo), from the start of the Sino-Japanese war to the end of World War II. The analysis helped categorize child protection and juvenile protection thinking into the following four types. First, liberal protection thinking maintained a conventional protection paradigm and criticized the wartime regime. Second, Japanese traditional protection thinking challenged conventional thought and promoted military cooperation. Third, scientific protection thinking maintained a certain distance from the wartime regime and prioritized scientific treatment. Fourth, fake conversion protection thinking ostensibly promoted military cooperation but, in reality, retained an individual perspective.
