Description

Previous studies have established ways to improve symptoms of children with selective mutism. However, few published studies have been done with adolescents and adults who have selective mutism. The present study aimed to examine whether symptoms of selective mutism in adolescents and adults could be improved by a therapeutic intervention that included gradual exposure and psychoeducation. The participants, 7 women and 3 men with selective mutism, ranging in age from teenagers to adults in their 30s, had had symptoms of mutism for between 5 and 30 years. The intervention program, which was conducted at approximately 1-month intervals over 6 months, consisted of gradual exposure using an anxiety hierarchy and psychoeducation. Individual goals were set for each participant; the target behavior was chosen by combining people, places, and activities. Exposure was conducted in the participants' daily life settings. The total scores of 9 of the participants on the Revised Edition of the Selective Mutism Questionnaire for Adults improved. Symptoms of all 10 participants improved; 2 of the participants were no longer mute. Improvement was found in the symptoms of the participants who had had the most severe symptoms. These results suggest that symptoms of mutism can be improved by therapeutic intervention even with individuals who are in their adolescence and adulthood.
