Abstract

In order to clarify the process of defending behavior against the bullying of junior high school girls, semi-structured interviews were conducted on 10 female college students, and the Modified Grounded Theory Approach (M-GTA) was used for analysis.

As a result, seven categories, two sub-categories, and sixteen concepts were generated. The process of defending behavior is as follows: it begins with “noticing bullying," then having “ambivalent feelings" between “staying paralyzed" and “wanting to change the current situation," and finally leading to the “confirmation of human relationship." In actual bullying situations, “taking an action" such as [speaking to a victim expressing concerns about him/her], [correcting a perpetrator] and [talking to teachers] was observed. After taking the action, “ambivalent feelings" including [gladness for having helped the victim] and [feeling regret for the action] developed. The “presence of a supporter" affected “ambivalent feelings," “confirmation of human relationship," and “taking an action," which led either to the progress or the stagnation of the process. Furthermore, it was revealed that students have feelings such as [I will not be bullied] or [I might be also bullied], which are “persistent underlying feelings" that affect the whole process.

By clarifying the process, it is suggested that observing the presence of another defender psychologically promotes the defending behavior of a defender. In addition, it is crucial to ensure safety and provide a prompt response to support children who take a defending action, and it is necessary to continue to provide positive and supportive feedback. Furthermore, the importance of daily guidance to enhance children's ability to detect bullying as well as the importance of teaching them practical skills so that they can fend off bullies by themselves is clarified.
