Description

In thyroid and parathyroid surgery, detection of the parathyroids is sometimes important to reserve post-operative parathyroid function. Visual parathyroid identification often presents difficulty because normal parathyroid glands resemble lymph nodes or fat tissues apparently. Recently parathyroid detection by near-infrared imaging has been reported. The technique is based on autofluorescence of the parathyroid glands. In this study, we used pde-neo® as the near infra-red sensing system. The technique allowed identification of 39 parathyroid glands in 19 patients at a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 79%. Near-infrared imaging is useful for intraoperative detection of parathyroid glands during thyroid/parathyroid surgery.
