Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the challenges of SME management and accounting in the age of the New Normal. “New Normal” is a coined word that combines “New” and “Normal”, and refers to a new lifestyle for adapting to “After COVID-19 / With COVID-19”. The key issues of this paper are as follows.

(1) The spread of COVID-19 has had a serious impact on corporate activities in Japan. In particular, its impact on SMEs is great. According to the surveys concerning the impact on SMEs of COVID-19, some SMEs are considering “discontinuance of business”, and the COVID-19 crisis is seriously damaging SMEs.

(2) As important issues for SME management in the age of the New Normal, (a) “BCP (Business Continuity Plan)” and (b) “Telework and DX (Digital Transformation)” can be mentioned.

(3) BCP means “a plan that clarifies policies, systems, procedures, etc. so that important businesses and operations will not be interrupted even if an unforeseen situation (risk) occurs.” In order to respond to COVID-19 (corporate risk), it is necessary to formulate the BCP, and it is desirable for SMEs to promote the BCP.

(4) Telework refers to “a flexible work style that makes effective use of time and place by using ICT (Information and Communication Technology).” And DX means “using data and digital technology to transform operations, organizations, corporate culture, and establish a competitive advantage.” With the spread of COVID-19, the introduction of IT and telework in SMEs is gradually expanding. However, since DX is not popular in SMEs yet, its promotion is desired.

(5) In the age of the New Normal, professional accountants are expected to play a role as a “certified organization on supporting business innovation.” They are expected to strengthen the financial foundation of SMEs by utilizing their advanced expertise and practical experience.
