This study investigated the relationship among observational evaluation of throw angle, motor development and throw distance in preschoolers during the long throw. Forty-seven four-year-old kindergarteners participated in this study. The children were instructed to throw a ball as far as possible. Ball throw distances were measured and throwing motions were recorded with a video camera. The throw angle adequacy and developmental stage was identified in each of the videotaped throwing motions by using an observational evaluation method. In our data analysis, the children were divided into two groups based on their throw angle adequacy. The “very low” throw angle group was significantly inferior to the other group in motor development score and throw distance. In the “very low” group, we could find no significant correlation coefficient between development score and throw distance. In the other group, by contrast, we found a strong positive correlation between them. These results suggest that children with a relatively mature throwing motion required an adequate throw angle to achieve their true maximum throw distance. We conclude that our observational evaluation method of throw angle adequacy is useful, and that improving the throw angle increases throw distance in preschoolers.
