Description

This paper is the latter half of the comparative study of bibliographic descriptions between descriptive cataloging and abstracting-and-indexing (A & I) services, and the former half was already published in this journal.
First, this paper provides a summary of whether or not an entry in each bibliographic description can be divided into the following two blocks: the block of description and that of access points.
Secondly, since the relationship between the two blocks is reflected in the relationship between a title and an author name of an item, the latter relationship and its background are investigated in both bibliographic descriptions. As a result, it is proved that in descriptive cataloging there is a notion of “work” of its own behind the combination of a title and an author name, and that the notion supports the combination through the main entry system. And it is also proved that there is no corresponding notion in A & I services. Finally, the internal structure and main characteristics of both bibliographic descriptions, including the above results, are represented by making use of the 3-layered conceptual model which the author proposed in another paper.
