Abstract

This study aims to investigate the evaluation of simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation by examining responses from listeners. Communication through interpretation involves interaction between speakers and listeners via interpreters. Although the evaluation of interpretation depends on listeners, the focus of research in Japan has been placed on the process of interpreting rather than on listener response. A survey of listener responses to interpretation from English to Japanese was conducted. Simultaneous and consecutive interpretations of a live, nationally broadcast speech in Japan were obtained, and both general viewers and professional interpreters were tasked with evaluating the interpretations. A comparison was then made of the appraisals effected by the two groups. The results show differences in assessment between the groups. It is suggested that a wide scope of discussions involving listeners, interpreters, and researchers is necessary to evaluate interpretation services.
