Abstract

Although there is still no established classification of cystic lung disease in children, a novel classification of pediatric cystic lung disease in Japan has recently been identified. Since many cases of congenital cystic lung disease have been diagnosed before birth in recent years, prenatal diagnosis and prediction of severity for congenital cystic lung disease will be added for a better understanding of the fellow members of the society of perinatal and neonatal medicine. Regarding cystic lung disease observed in infants after birth, features based on diagnostic imaging and the essential points of the treatment, including surgery, are described. In addition, pathology and clinical symptoms are defined. We also discuss late complications after lung resection and their associations with respiratory function and malignancy for cystic lung diseases.

In cystic lung diseases, which are relatively common in neonates and infants, congenital pulmonary airway malformation, bronchial atresia, pulmonary sequestration, bronchogenic cyst, pneumatocele, persistent pulmonary interstitial emphysema, bullla and bleb, and pleuropulmonary blastoma are further explained. We also discuss diffuse pulmonary cystic diseases in children, which should be differentiated from cystic lung disease.
