Abstract
type:P(論文)
The purpose of this paper is to examine gender in the context of mass media for young children, and to consider the role of media in gender formation during early childhood. For this study, 35 TV programs for children televised in the fall of 2000 and the spring of 2001 in the Miyazaki area are recorded, and 112 picture books for children were collected. The process of the analysis was as follows: (1) The proportion of female to male characters, their roles in the programs, and their occupations were analyzed; (2) For some programs and stories, the characteristics of the character, and the description of gender dichotomy were analyzed. The study found asymmetrical gender portrayals. Both for TV programs and for books, male characters appeared more than female ones. Female characters appeared in supportive roles more than male did. For the adult characters, gender division of labor was described. From qualitative analysis, the female characters and the male character were described as counterparts and stereotypically. From the analysis, the dichotomous and asymmetrical descriptions of gender were revealed. The findings are discussed in relation to previous findings, and in terms of gender formation during early childhood.
