Abstract

Many Japanese have an image of Vienna, the “City of Music”, one of a city proud of musical tradition and achievements. However, since becoming a member of the EU, and the resulting loss of national symbols (e.g. the Euro instead of the shilling) is Vienna may now having to confront the reality it is another city in Europe and not “Vienna is Vienna”. With the free movement of people could it be that the level of performances are becoming weakened than previously. In Austria, especially Vienna, the responsibility of music education is very important to the country as a whole. However, it is evident that the appreciation of music is becoming more class related and the system of music education has not yet been adequately established. This paper is based on a one-month survey of Austrian arts organizations and educational activities of arts and culture facilities was conducted in 2011 (Aug.-Sept. 2011). The aim is to verify the significance of music and art education through the report of the author’s field work in Vienna.
