Description
We have developed a carbon isotope enrichment system for use in conjunction with the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer. Using thermal diffusion of CO, we obtained an enrichment factor of about 3 for ^<13>C for half-gram carbon in 5 days. This means we expect for ^<14>C an enrichment factor of 9,corresponding to an extension of the radiocarbon time scale by >20,000 years. With small modification of this system, it would be possible to perform higher isotope enrichment of ^<14>C. The isotopic enrichment, as a new method for the extension of radiocarbon dating range, is introduced in this report.
