Abstract

In the innermost surface of developing secondary wall, cellulose microfibrils are observed clearly in the daytime and matrix is observed at night. The result shows diurnal periodicity of the supply of cell wall components in developing cell wall. In this study, we examined the effect of turgor pressure on the diurnal periodicity of cell wall thickening. The turgor pressure of hydroponic sample increased when the light was on and decreased when the light was off. Though the light was on, the turgor pressure increased when the hydroponic water was compressed. In hydroponic sample, cellulose microfibrils were observed in the innermost surface of developing secondary wall when it’s turgor pressure was low, and matrix was evident when the turgor pressure was high. We must consider the effect of turgor pressure on the supply of cell wall components in the developing secondary wall.
