The purpose of this study was to clarify the difference in the neuromuscular activity of the knee extensors (vastus lateral: VL, rectus femoris: RF, vastus medialisis: VM) between during high intensity interval exercise (HIE) and constant load exercise (CE). Twelve male middle and long distance college runners (age: 21 ± 1 yr) performed HIE (4 sets of 4-min exercise at 80-85%V˙O2peak with 3-min of active resting periods at 30%V˙O2peak), and CE (28-min constant load exercise at about 60%V˙O2peak) using a cycle ergometer. Total works (J) and exercise time (28-min) were identical between HIE and CE. The surface electromyographic (EMG) signal was recorded from the VL, RF and VM. Root mean square (RMS) of EMG signals was calculated during the last 10 cranks every minute. RMS at each time was normalized by the value of the RMS at 100%V˙O2peak. Normalized RMS was averaged for each muscle during 28-min, which was compared between HIE and CE. The averaged normalized VL and VM RMS did not significantly differ between HIE and CE (VL: 61±15% vs. 58±22%, VM: 60±9% vs. 60±9%, n.s.), whilst that of RF was significantly greater during HIE than CE (62±22% vs. 48±17%, P < 0.05). These results suggest that HIE protocol might be enough to elicit RF muscle activation as an endurance training regimen.
