Abstract

This paper investigates refusals to invitations by Javanese, Indonesian, and Malaysian speakers in Malay cultural sphere. The data based on DCT (Discourse Completion Test) were collected from 134 informants: 33 Javanese speakers, 33 Indonesian speakers, and 68 Malaysian speakers. This paper is considered to be a part of eleven cross-cultural surveys (Ito 2001a; 2001b; 2002a; 2002b; 2003a; 2003b; 2004a; 2004b; 2004c; 2005). The paper is divided into five sections. The first section reviews papers on cross-cultural pragmatics. The second section presents politeness theory (Brown & Levinson 1987), which is the framework of the surveys. The third section outlines experimental design, such as informant population, their background, research period, method, procedure, and measurement scales. The fourth section is devoted to the discussion. The final section concludes the findings.
