説明

Missionary, African explorer, physician, and natural scientist, and also committed to abolishing the slave trade, David Livingston was one of the most prominent in the 19th century. There are many biographies detailing his life, and Livingston's book business is less thriving than before, but new books and scholarly articles on him are constantly being written. He continues to be a controversial person. This paper reviews trends in Livingstone research in English-speaking countries and Japan, and highlights future challenges. A new Livingstone study, represented by the Spectral Imaging Project, shows that his diverse and vast manuscripts and other heritage provide unparalleled windows to key aspects of 19th century world history and intercultural encounters is based on the fact that the latest manuscript research offers us many perspectives. By exploring Livingstone's ideological background and illuminating his own personas he wanted, we might be able to see the new Livingstone statue as a more complex figure.
