近年、日本における地方の地域社会では伝統的な劇場（いわゆる芝居小屋）がまちづくりの重要な資源として注目されている。本論文では、香川県仲多度郡琴平町の金丸座（旧金毘羅大芝居）を取り上げるが、金丸座は江戸時代の終わりに近い1835年に創建され、当時は金毘羅大芝居という名称で知られた本格的な歌舞伎劇場であった。江戸や大坂や京都の芝居小屋に見劣りしない劇場であり、それら三都から多くの有名な歌舞伎役者が来て盛大な大芝居が行われた。その後、明治終わりから昭和の新しいメディアと近代的な劇場の時代の流れのなかで映画館などの用途に変更され老朽化も進んだが、第二次世界大戦後の民主主義的な価値観の下で重要な文化財として見直され、大規模な修理が行われ1976年に復元された。そして、1985年から「四国こんぴら歌舞伎大芝居」が春の恒例の行事として行われている。江戸時代から琴平町は有名な金刀比羅宮（金毘羅大権現）の門前町として繁栄しており、四国の代表的な観光スポットであり、1980年の琴平町第1次総合計画から琴平町は観光まちづくり（住んでよし訪れてよしのまちづくり）を推進している。本論文では、歴史社会学と観光まちづくり論の立場から金丸座（旧金毘羅大芝居）の歴史的な変遷（いわゆる紆余曲折）と現代的な意義について考察し論述してみたい。考察と論述の際には、『町史ことひら』、「広報ことひら」などの琴平町のさまざまな資料を活用する。なお、江戸時代に創建された時の名称は、金毘羅大芝居であり、明治後半からは所有者の移り変わりとともに金丸座という名称が定着したが、1970年に旧金毘羅大芝居の名称で国の重要文化財に指定されたことを考慮し、論文の題目では金丸座（旧金毘羅大芝居）と表記する。

In recent years, the traditional theaters of rural areas in Japan (called Shibai-Goya), have been attracting attention, especially as important resources for invigorating local communities. This paper looks at the former Kompira Grand Theater (also known as Kanamaruza) in Kotohira-cho, Nakatado-gun, Kagawa Prefecture, which was built in 1835 and is not only Japan's oldest theater but has also hosted performances by many famous kabuki actors. After a period of decline, the theater was renovated, and since 1985, a "Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Grand Theater" event has been held each spring. Kotohira-cho has flourshed thanks to its famous shrine Kotohiragu (also known as Kompira Daigongen) and has been one of Shikoku's top tourist destinations. Since the first Kotohira-cho comprehensive plan in 1980, Kotohira-cho has promoted "Tourism-based Community Development", the concept of developing with harmony between local residents and visitors. This paper investigates the historical change of Kanamaruza (the former Kompira Grand Theater), which hasfaced a wide range of difficult challenges. Historical sociology and the theory of Tourism-based Community Development are untilized in the analysis and discussion of various historical and public relations documents from Kotohira-cho.
