Description

We have developed the GPS drifting buoy and the remote management system. With these buoys and system, we observed the vertical structure of horizontal divergence / convergence in three layers (surface, middle and bottom) in Ariake Bay on 26 July 2006. In case of the surface divergence (convergence) field, the middle and bottom layers show the convergence (divergence) and divergence (convergence) field, respectively. This suggests that surface water mass has a different divergence / convergence character compared with the lower layer and the vertical current structure may play an important role for the primary production in the coastal area.
