Abstract
Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a highly aggressive and lethal disease. Even after comprehensive staging or cytoreductive surgery, followed by multidisciplinary therapies, many patients relapse and finally die of this disease. These poor outcomes associated with uterine leiomyosarcoma can be explained, in part, by the rarity, unknown etiology, and highly divergent genetic aberrations of the disease. Significant advances in molecular biology and genetic research have allowed better identification of the molecular signatures of leiomyosarcoma and may help to establish an optimal treatment strategy for this disease. The clinical features, treatments, genetic profiles, and omics-based studies of specific biomarkers for leiomyosarcoma are reviewed in this article.
