Abstract

With the introduction of"specific health checkup/specific health guidance"by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare from April, 2008 as a measure against lifestyle diseases, there has been increased interest towards so called"metabolic syndrome", or group of risk factors including abdominal obesity, high blood glucose(blood sugar) levels, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure. Low physical activity is reported to be an important factor for metabolic syndrome. With the advance of electronic devices, an extremely light weight(approx. 36g)physical activity monitoring device equipped with 3-axis accelerometer has been recently marketed. In this research, the new physical activity monitoring device is used to measure the physical activity for male undergraduate students and university faculty and staff, in order to verify its effectiveness as a prevention method for metabolic syndrome. Especially the measurement results of undergraduate students showed both a disorderly lifestyle and extremely low physical activity.
