Description

This paper presents a discussion of quotations from the Psalms that are shared in the writings of Shenoute of Atripe. Shenoute was an abbot of the White Monastery in Upper Egypt who lived in the fourth and fifth centuries. He is widely regarded to be the most prolific writer in Coptic. The discussion focuses on quotations from the Psalms in Canon 6, one of Shenoute's collections of Coptic writings and sermons. Within my role as a research fellow at the Collaborative Research Centre 1136 "Education and Religion in Cultures of the Mediterranean and Its Environment from Ancient to Medieval Times and to the Classical Islam" at the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft; DFG), I participated in a project to produce a digital edition of Canon 6 and analyze Shenoute's educational discourse therein. With the cooperation of the Digital Edition of the Coptic Old Testament project of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, I analyzed the intertextuality of quotations from the Psalms. This paper presents a case study of an analysis that focuses on the intertextuality of quotations. The analysis of the examples confirms that Shenoute employed recontextualization, which is the process of detaching the text of the Psalms from its original context and adapting it to the context of the monastery in which he is teaching.
