Two experiments were conducted to examine the shape of personal space. In Exp. I, the shape of personal space was examined by the paper-pencil procedure and the stop-distance procedure. Subjects were male and female undergraduate students. Main results were as follows: ( a ) Significantly larger personal space was obtained in the opposit sex condition than the same sex condition. ( b ) Significantly larger personal space was obtained in the stranger condition than the acquaintance condition. In Exp. II, the shape of personal space was examined by the field study. Main results were as follows: ( a ) Significantly larger personal space was obtained in the estimated fifty-year-old dyad of the same sex than the estimated twenty-year-old dyad of the same sex. ( b ) The smallest personal space was given to the estimated twenty-year-old female dyad.
