Abstract

This paper considers newspaper reports on disability sports in Japan since the 1990s. Newspaper report on disability sports in Japan, have been increasing since the 1990s. In preceding studies this increase has generally been interpreted positively. This is because those studies assumed that an increase in reports would raise social interest and promote disability sports. This paper on the other hand however considers the newspaper reports on disability sports with a focus on the gap among disability sports events. Concretely, we analyzed the gap between events in the Paralympic Games and those that are not included in the Paralympics, specifically the gap between wheelchair basketball and wheelchair twin basketball. As a result of this analysis, the following points were clarified. 1) There is a trend towards an increase of newspaper reports on disability sports and the Paralympics Games, and 2) as the reports on the Paralympic Games increase, the gap in coverage between Paralympic and non-Paralympic sports is widening. Therefore, it cannot be stated that the increased social interest in disability sports and the Paralympic Games is desirable for all disability sports. There is a dilemma that with increasing social interest in disability sports and the Paralympic Games, the interest in non-Paralympic or non-competitive events decreases. Based on these issues, we need to create a wider awareness of disability sports in order to support their expansion.
