Abstract

Historians have explained the friction in Japanese-Korean relations that began in the first year of the Meiji era (1868) as a political-ideological disagreement over interpretation of the terms "Emperor" (koh) and "King" (oh); as Japan's exorbitant ambitions for conquest; and as a deception on the part of the political and economic analyses should be acknowledged, when one begins to consider the problem from the point of view of cultural communication it becomes clear that the friction between the two countries cannot be explained according to mere political and economic theories. Instead one can understand this diplomatic friction as friction between cultural and social contexts as seen in the areas of "cultural negativity", self-centered understanding of the other, differences in understanding of the Asian system of hierarchy, differences in views of the West and differences in attitude towards own culture and reforms.
