Description
Generally speaking, when we see people in trouble, we tend to ask; “Are you OK?” or “May I help you?” The purpose of the present study was to examine how people in trouble recognize others’ intentions when providing such utterances, and how these individuals feel toward such utterances. A female college students (N=85) participated in a questionnaire study. Participants were divided into two conditions. In one condition, participants were supposed to be spoken by their close friend (n=43), while in the other condition, by an acquaintance (n=42). We prepared two diff erent situations: the physical help scenario and the mental help scenario. We used fi ve kinds of utterances in each situation. Participants were asked about their cognitions (6 items) and emotions (8 items) in response to each utterance. Results showed that it was easier to understand another’s intension to help during the physical help scenario than during mental help scenario. Furthermore, it was more diffi cult to understand the intention of an acquaintance’s utterances. Finally, in a situation which an individual is off ering mental help, a close friend’s off er to help be more emotionally satisfying.
