Description

Indirect reciprocity, repaying the favor for the third person but benefactor, is promoted by gratitude and inhibited by indebtedness. Although previous studies examined the effect of situational factors such as value and cost onindirect reciprocity via evoking gratitude and indebtedness, they ignored factors related to the beneficiary. The current study investigated the effect of the regulatory focus of beneficiaries on (1) their evaluation of value and cost, (2) emotions of gratitude and indebtedness, and (3) indirect reciprocity. Results showed that manipulation of regulatory focus had no effect on any indices and did not support the hypotheses. However, correlation analysis in each condition found that relationships between value and cost evaluation are significant only in the control condition. In other words, manipulation of the regulatory focus can reduce the covariance of these evaluations and make it possible to evoke gratitude or indebtedness selectively.
