Description

Kyara indicates personal characteristics and personality. The formulation of kyara signifies behaving in a role that matches one’s kyara in a shared communication space. In this study, we considered the effects of the formulation of kyara on university students. We first prepared a scale to measure the formulation of kyara and then examined the influences of multiple aspects of the self, situation changeovers, desire for approval, and acting, which are regarded as particularly prominent aspects of kyara. A total of 190 male and 242 female university students completed the questionnaires. Their responses indicated that the formulation of kyara could be divided into two types: passive kyara (which means kyara imposed by others) and active kyara (which means imposing kyara onto others). Passive kyara was influenced by conscious and unconscious situation changeovers, harmonious acting, accommodative acting, difficult situations, switching friends, motivation to avoid rejection, and benefit. Active kyara, on the other hand, was influenced by motivation for acquiring praise, switching friends, conscious situation changeovers, and the united self.
