This paper summarizes the content of interviews with Miyoko Matsumura, of December 8-9, 2006 in Paris, France. Miyoko Matsumura is a Kyoto native who was born in 1919. Her husband Seiji began employment at the National Institute of Genetics in the City of Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, where he moved with his family. Miyoko became a key member of the Association of Mishima Mothers and led a mothers’ movement. In 1963, Shizuoka Prefecture announced plans to construct petrochemical complexes in the Cities of Mishima and Numazu and the Town of Shimizu. Miyoko, along with members of the Association of Mishima Mothers, opposed this plan because of its potential for causing pollution. At the behest of the mayor of Mishima, her husband Seiji established a study group to examine the complexes’ construction plans and noted that construction of petrochemical complexes might cause pollution. Thus, complex construction was halted by citizens through an opposition movement.
