The Japanese machine tools industry has developed against the backdrop of increasing precision and expansion in production parts for the machinery industry, and the semiconductor manufacturing equipment industry has developed in line with technical innovations in semiconductors. These two industries are similar not only in the fact that they both manufacture production machinery but also in that they have experienced a significant shift from dependence on domestic to external demand. Moreover, they are similar in that this external dependency is strongly influenced by the expansion of Asian markets. This paper compares the two industries from four perspectives, that is, trading structure, competitive environment, product characteristics, and technological innovation, to examine the possibility of employing local production to capture the demand generated by expanding Asian markets.
