Description

The purpose of research is considering the speed theory and the occupy theory of Paul Virilio’s book, Popular Defense and Ecological Struggle (1978). In this book, Virilio discusses about the problem of confrontations between acceleration and occupy in the political movements at the time (for example, guerrilla, Japanese Red Army). On the one hand, he praised guerrilla of South Vietnamese force (Front national de libération du Sud- Viêt Nam) that had characteristics of the attachment to its territories and considered it as a kind of occupy movement. On the other hand, he criticized terrorism of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Japanese Red Army that had characteristic of using media as a tool for demonstration and considered it as accelerative struggle and as opposed to guerrilla. This problem of confrontation between guerrilla and terrorism also concerns with the political movements after the global justice movement, because these movements occupy a certain of space, at the same time, actively using media as a tool for communication and expansion of them. This research argues that Virilio anticipated media politics of current political movements. Although his anticipation was pessimistic, his 70s thought is useful for grasping characteristics of media politics.
