Abstract

Osaka University has conducted the Multilingual Expert Program (MLE) since 2018. It is a cross-department education program centered in the School of Foreign Studies. The program aims for students to become “persons who are able to work globally on the urgent issues of the modern world specializing in multilingual and multicultural information” (Ouchi 2017: http://www.mle.osaka-u.ac.jp/about/). Some students in the author’s class in 2018 passed the selection requirements to study as overseas students in Germany and the Philippines under the Osaka University program, or between departments, having obtained a certain level of achievement in the English language proficiency tests conducted by external institutions which were required for their credit acquisition. And, other students were selected as Group of Twenty (G20) Summit volunteer interpreters together with other university students. From the author’s class, two of six Osaka University students attended the G20 Summit as volunteer interpreters in English from June 28 to 30, 2019. In 2018, students who majored in Spanish and Filipino also attended the class, having aimed to acquire beginner level interpreting skills in English. On the other hand, the ISO/TC 37 Committee having worked on languages and terminology for ISO standards since 1947 when the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded, has established ISO international standards for translation and interpretation services since 2012. In particular, the ISO/TC 37 Committee has established specialized standards on translation and interpreting, rather than on general translation or interpretation, since 2017, including on legal interpreting and translation, healthcare interpreting, and conference interpreting. The purpose of this paper is to tentatively answer the research question of which points of the above ISO standards on translation and interpreting have mutual relation with the MLE program of Osaka University from the viewpoint of practical language education. To attain the above purpose, the author describes the above standards on translation and interpreting in detail and reports the practical conditions of the MLE program having been conducted every week since 2018.
