説明

In Japan magemono, or the round chip box, has been in popularuse as lunchbox, flax pail and container for lacquer, among otherthings.Magemono consists of two parts; a base (soko-ita) and a wall(gawa-ita). Three techniques are employed to join the base andthe wall: kaki-ire, uchi-komi and nui-tsuke. Many similarities existbetween magemono- and birchbark-work.This paper analyzes the National Museum of Ethnology'scollection magemono and birchbark box specimens, obtained fromJapan and elsewhere in East Asia.
