抄録

The first two sections provide a state-of-the-art report of thestudies of Tibetan dialects, and then propose a classification ofall dialects known to date, together with the geographicaldistribution of each of the six major dialect divisions : (1) WesternArchaic Dialects, (2) Western Innovative Dialects, (3) Centralor U-Tsang Dialects, (4) Southern Dialects, (5) Khams Dialects,and (6) Amdo Dialects.There follows two sections devoted to a discussion of phonological,lexical and grammatical features chosen as classificatorycriteria, with special reference to those advanced by Chinesescholars, and to the application of some phonological features,particularly those related to the development of tones to theclassification of most Tibetan dialects spoken in the area to thesouthwest of China.
