本稿は老年人類学の新たな可能性を提示する。これまでにも老年人類学という分野は存在したが，そこでは常に老人を「伝統」という枠組みからしか捉えてこなかった。しかし現在，どの地域でも近代化が進み，老人のライフスタイルは多様となっている。こうした状況下で老人がどのように社会的ポジションを得ているのかを考察する必要がある。　その老年人類学における新たな視点として，本稿ではジェンダー論の議論を援用しつつ，社会構築主義―つまり「老人」というカテゴリーやそこに付随する社会的な規範は社会的，言説的，歴史的に構築されているという考え方―の再考を行いたい。社会構築主義では，ある概念やカテゴリーは，パフォーマティヴィティを破綻させることで変化するという前提が存在している。この前提は本当に妥当なのだろうか。　こうした問題を踏まえて，筆者が調査を行ってきたヴァヌアツ・アネイチュム島の事例を考察する。アネイチュムには，他の多くの地域と同様，「老人は伝統を知っている」という社会通念や規範がある。しかしその一方で，人生の大部分をアネイチュム以外の地域で過ごし，それゆえ「伝統を知らない」と考えられている老人たちも存在している。また概していえば，彼らを含め，多くの老人はそれほどアネイチュムの伝統に詳しいわけではない。つまり，老人としてのパフォーマティヴィティは破綻しているともいえる。だが彼らは若者たちに敬されており，それを支えているのは，歳を重ねているという事実だけである。つまり「歳を取る」という宿命的な行為ゆえ，「老人」は確固としたリアリティとして存在しているのだと主張する。

In this paper, I present a new perspective on the anthropology of aging.Studies on the anthropology of aging usually view the aged only from theperspective of “tradition”. However, the lifestyle of the aged is now becomingmore diverse with the influence of rapid modernization. I discuss how theseaged people maintain their social positions in a society which has undergonedrastic modernization.To present the new perspective, I rethink social constructionism,andclaim that “the aged” as a category and the social role of the aged are social,discoursive or historical constructions. Social constructionism has the theoreticalassumption that a given concept or category may be changed if “performativity”breaks down. We need to examine the validity of this assumption indetail.The idea that the aged should know their own tradition is commonlyshared among the people on Aneityum Island, Southern Vanuatu. However,some people are recognized as having little knowledge of tradition becausethey have spent most of their lives outside Aneityum society. Generally speaking,many of the aged have little knowledge of their tradition, that is to saythe performativity of the aged has already been compromised. However youngpeople hold them in great esteem. The only reason for this is just that they areolder. I point out that the reality of the aged firmly exists because “growingold” is inevitable.
