Fusao Hayashi (1903-75) was a writer of Proletarian literature. However, in the 1930s, he transformed a view of society, instead of Marxian class theory, recognizing the fact that the modernization of Japan originated in the imperialist hegemonic conflict with the West. In the controversy on the Art Popularization, Hayashi insisted on creating works to be read by the public readers, but the opinion was criticized. After coming out of prison in 1932, Hayashi presented essays on the mission of Literary persons, and published the novel "SEINEN". Takiji Kobayashi criticized the views of Hayashi from the standpoint of Proletarian school. "SEINEN" was the story of young men in Choshu Domain who idealized Kaikoku at the end of the Tokugawa period. These young men were portrayed as persons who find the ideal in relation to the reality rather than the absolute correctness. After that, Hayashi began to publish serially the novel "SAIGO TAKAMORI". On that extension, he drew the social ideal of Koa in his essays and novels set in Manchuria. In the 1930s, crises such as economic depression, political unrest and global warfare appeared. Under such circumstances, in response to the desire of the times, Fusao Hayashi expressed the social image and the logic for justifying Modern Japan.
