The world is running away. This essay attempts to ascertain the causes and effects. The main phenomena of the runaway world are as follows: destruction of the natural environment, destruction of the human environment by the dissolution of communities, dismantling of the welfare state, and flood-like globalization. Critically assessing Anthony Giddens’s Runaway World from an original standpoint, this essay inquires into the actual phases and causes of the above widespread phenomena. Through this inquiry, there emerge from the postwar market and nation-state power systems serious functional diseases, which have caused the runaway world. The two effects of the runaway world are historically abnormal high growth of the world economy and the emergence of the post-war market and nation-state systems, which began when the US abandoned the traditional self-regulating monetary process in the early 1970s. These factors have created the bubble capitalism.
