Description

What factors influence the probability that women may undertake market employment? In what way, and in which directions, do these factors affect the situation? To date, these problems have been empirically treated in numerous studies that are already in print. Taken in combination, however, the two central questions encourage us to pose yet a third, which is: in such cases, how ought we to interpret the meaning of the term, Probability in itself? The paper presented here proposes an idea that can, it is hoped, help us to answer the third question by more precisely defining the sense of probability as a word and as a concept. In addition, this study further provides a survey of a previously published English-language literature concerning with empirical investigations of the first two questions given above: to begin with, the nature and identity of factors affecting the probability of women to participate in the labor market, and, secondly, the directions taken by influence from these factors. Attention is focused upon empirical studies relating to married women, as distinct from similar research concerned with single women.
