Since the age of Smith and Ricardo, lots of discussion has been developed regarding foreign trade and international division of labour, which contributed generation of international economy. It appears that the discussion has ended up with victory of Ricardo's theory. However situation of today's global trade and developing countries clearly reveals some weakness in the theory. This paper will revisit background and underlying ideas of free trade theory from Smith's theory and mercantilism. Foreign trade has walked with the idea of free trade. Therefore, it is also necessary to identify roots of the idea of free trade in foreign trade in the cotext of history of political economy.
