Description

This paper discusses the relative importance of performance factors in winning basketball games in the past 16 years of the NBA (between the 2004-2005 and 2019-2020 seasons). Specifically, we examined the contributions of the Four Factors (effective field goal percentage, turnover percentage, rebound percentage, and free throw rate) to winning games in the regular season, using a multiple regression analysis. The results indicated multiple formulas of the Four Factors in basketball free throws: (1) Oliver’s initial Four Factors, (2) Four Factors focusing on Free Throws Made (FTM/FGA), and (3) Four Factors focusing on Free Throw Attempts (FTA/FGA). Comparing multiple models, we found that the free throw rate using Free Throws Made (FTM/FGA) was essential for predicting the win rate.
