Abstract

Various hats are featured in Katherine Mansfield's "The Garden party "beside the main characters, Laura and her mother. Furthermore, hats play an important role in Mansfield's other works. The purpose of this study is to research what hats mean in Mansfield's whole life and what they symbolize in "The Garden Party". In this paper, we attempt to interpret the role of each hat appearing in the work, referring to definitions of symbols and colors. Then we point out that the relationship between Laura and her mother reflects the one between the author and her mother. We also argue that the author's untold message to her mother is expressed in Laura's hat and lines.
