Description

The Chos hbyun or the history of Tibetan Buddhism still constitute principal sources for the study of T'u-fan Buddhism, but they often disagree with more reliable Chinese sources, which, to our great regret, are not rich on the history of Buddhism. Accordingly, the reliability of the chos hbyun has been much in question. Recently, as the result of comparative study of the chos hbyun with those inscriptions as well as the Tun-hang (敦煌) documents brought to light by G. Tucci, H.E. Richardson, J. Bacot and F.W. Thomas. Bu-ston's chos hbyun and the Deb gter snon po seem to be accepted not only as religious but historical records. The stories of the origins of monasteries and of their political influence, which are told in those T'u-fan materials, bear witness to their historical actuality.
