Continuing on the previous study of rice prices (see Nakayama Mio, "The Secular Trend of Rice Prices in Chiang-nan in the First Half of the Ch'ing Period", Shigaku Zasshi, vol. 87, no. 9, pp. 1-33), in this paper I looked into the long-term trend in price changes of five other commodities, i.e., raw cotton, raw silk, cotton fabrics, land, and wages in Chiang-nan in the first half of the Ch'ing period. Except in some cases of raw silk, cotton fabrics, and wages, the following pattern was observed : 1) the upward trend from the end of the Ming 明 to the first half of the Shun-chih 順治 reign (1644-61) ; 2) the downward trend during the K'ang-hsi 康煕 reign (1662-1722); 3) the sharp rise during the Ch'ien-lung 乾隆 reign (1736-95). This pattern agrees roughly with that found in the rice prices and thus can be regarded as the general pattern of price change. As for the peculiarities in the price formation of some commodities, the following can be said : 1) The condition of cotton fabrics market and competition with products from other regions influenced the raw cotton prices. 2) Compared with the raw cotton, competition with the products from other regions was less in case of the raw silk, and the prices too seem to have been more stable. 3) The prices of cotton fabrics were closely related to those of raw cotton ; during the famines, however, they showed a marked decline due to the forced selling. 4) The prices of land were determined by dividing the annual yield by the average rate of return ; however, the common notion of regarding the land as "permanent property" and forced sales during the famines have to be taken into account. With the findings in this and the previous study, the task now will be to explain the reasons for the price changes and also their influence on the production and market structure in the context of the Ch'ing economic history.
