Abstract

The Tarim Basin before the A.D. eighth century is said to have enjoyed a great prosperity. Until now, this prosperity has largely been attributed to the region's role as a middleman for Chinese products in the East-West trade, particularly the silk. No doubt, the China trade occupied an important place in the economic life of the region ; putting too much emphasis on it, however, will inevitably lead us to neglect other industries. In this essay I looked into, among those other industries, the handwoven cloth industry, which still is a major industry of the region. As a result, l have found out that it was as much responsible for the region's prosperity before the A.D. eighth century as the China trade.
