It is common knowledge that the Hanshu 漢書 was written by Ban Biao 班彪 and Ban Gu 班固. Ban Biao wrote the Houzhuan 後傳, based on the historical narrations of Liu Xiang 劉向 and Liu Xin 劉歆, and also transformed the archives of Wang Mang 王莽, which were contained in the Imperial biographical histories (diji 帝紀) into a series of biographies (liezhuan 列傳). He appended Wang Mang's chronicles to the end of the Houzhuan and thereby set the chronological limits for this work. Ban Gu, in accordance with his dead father's last wish, carried on his father's work. Starting with the founder (Gaozu 高祖) of the Han dynasty, he continued his work up to the start of the period covered by the Hou. Houzhuan and then transformed the Houzhuan so that the whole formed a biographical history of the Han dynasty. At the same time, taking a Confucian standpoint, he rewrote the diji and liezhuan. Ban Gu also showed an interest in and wrote about special themes related to the earlier periods. He also tabulated information relating to the Han and earlier periods. His narrations on these topics also bore signs of his viewpoint. They, Ban Biao and Ban Gu, remaining faithful to the material in the bibliography which resulted from Liu Xiang and Liu Xin's revision of historical materials, used this information to enrich their narrations of history. Ban Gu especially, used the abundant literature of Dongguan 東觀 who was appointed to the Lantai lingshi 蘭臺令史 by Mingdi 明帝, to supplement his articles. On the one hand, they praised the rule of the Han dynasty, but they also described historical matters in a factually faithful, affirmative way. They hoped that people would consider their work as providing some moral basis, and hence use it accordingly. The Confucian viewpoint expressed in the Hanshu was the product of two factors. First, the political ideology of the Wang Mang administration, which was criticised by the Ban's, and also the ideology of the Later Han administration, which was the successor to Wang Mang's political power. Second, it was based on the historical material of the father and son pair of Liu Xiang and Liu Xin.
